Pearson Education and Australian Psychological Society Psychology Early Career Teaching Award

Recognising excellence in teaching Psychology
Pearson Education Australia is pleased to announce that the Pearson Education and Australian Psychological Society Early Career Teaching Award will again be offered for 2008. The aim of the award, which was created in 2002, is to encourage and recognise innovative teaching practices in Psychology at a university level.
The Pearson Education Australia and APS Early Career Teaching Award is reviewed by a panel of judges comprising senior APS academic members appointed by the Director of Science.
The award consists of $3,000 and a plaque, to be presented at the APS Conference in September 2009.
Selection Criteria
The criteria for the Award are intended to be broad. The categories below are by no means exhaustive, but illustrative of the kinds of areas in which excellence may be demonstrated.
- Interest and enthusiasm for teaching and for the promotion of student learning. Evidence for this criterion could include previous teaching roles and practices adopted.
- Ability to organise course material and to present it cogently and engagingly. Evidence for this criterion could include course outlines for syllabuses, teaching materials such as videotapes, CD-ROMs or references to websites, interactive online activities.
- Command of subject matter. Evidence for this criterion could include reference lists used to teach components of the course, publications in related areas.
- Provision of appropriate student assessment. Evidence for this criterion could include formal evaluations by students, innovation in assessment.
- Professional and systematic approach to teaching development. Evidence for this criterion could include innovation in teaching methodology.
- Participation in professional activities and research relating to teaching. Evidence for this criterion could include: journal articles, chapters and books, citations and reviews of such materials, and invitations to give talks, addresses and workshops.
Nominations should be submitted using the official Nomination Form, with all details completed, and should be received no later than Friday, 31st October 2008.
Application Process
- Applications should include a letter addressing the above criteria.
- Applicants should provide a curriculum vitae of no more than three A4 pages and a brief statement (one page) about their philosophy of teaching, with supporting evidence.
- Two written references from colleagues and/or students prepared to comment on the applicant's teaching experience.
- Applicants must provide support documentation of how the $3,000 prize would be used, e.g. payment towards an overseas trip to attend a relevant psychology conference; funding the development of a teaching program, software, innovative teaching pilots or "new" teaching projects.
- Four copies of the application (including supporting documentation) must be submitted.
