Behind the News is a current affairs and issues-based magazine designed for students in upper primary and lower secondary. It is published each January, April, July and October.

Behind the News aims to:
- provide a diverse range of classroom resources including print and video
- develop students’ understandings of issues in the wider community
- promote discussion and boost oral language skills
- develop high-level thinking skills
- engage reading interest and improve literacy skills
Behind the News magazine Teacher’s Kit includes teaching notes and a CD-ROM.
The teaching notes include a series of activities relating to the ‘hot topic’ in each issue. Four focus questions are posed, each with three core learning experiences that are briefly outlined.
Activities can be completed on their own or as part of a sequence of tasks. Essential resources for the activities are provided in the magazine or on the accompanying CD-ROM, which includes video files, interactive activities and blackline masters.
Video files provided on the CD-ROM originate from Behind the News television episodes and other ABC Television programs. This digital content can be used for a variety of purposes, including focusing information gathering, and generating subjective and objective responses from students. |
